Our Mission Statement

To teach children the values and skills they will need to live a successful life filled with a sense of belonging, love for learning, and compassion for others.

Our Vision

To create and cultivate a therapeutic, educational culture that is proven to be successful in effecting positive change in the children we serve.

GNETS of Oconee
School Pledge

I belong!
I want to learn!
I am capable!
I care about others!

Why does GNETS of Oconee use the Turtle to symbolize our program?

In the Native American Culture, the tortoise (turtle) represents strength and patience. Our students and staff are strong and patient, just like the tortoise.

Also, in the story of the “Tortoise and the Hare,” the turtle perseveres to achieve his goals.   Like the tortoise, we also persevere while many around us quit.

The tortoise has a tough outer shell – like many of us!

GNETS of Oconee is one of twenty-four GNETS programs comprising the Georgia Network for Education and Therapeutic Support.  The GNETS mission is to support the local school systems’ continuum of services by providing comprehensive special education services and therapeutic support to students with severe emotional and behavioral disorders and students with autism.

We are located in Milledgeville, Georgia and we serve the school systems of Baldwin, Jasper, Johnson, Hancock, Putnam, Washington, and Wilkinson counties.  We currently have 12 classrooms, 10 being located at the main center and 2 satellite classrooms located in various schools in the Oconee
Area.

Purpose

To engage children with emotional, social and academic challenges by promoting growth and change through strength based methods and best practices that enhance resiliency and self-efficacy.

We STRIVE – using Strength-Based Techniques to Restore Independence Virtue and Excellence!

How can a student be referred?

Parents, schools, community agencies and physicians may refer a preschool child for services.  All other students should be referred as part of the ongoing continuum of services offered by the school systems.  An extensive intake process is completed analyzing home and school situations, as well as the child’s emotional, intellectual, and academic functioning levels.  A placement committee then meets to determine the most appropriate and least restrictive services for the child.  Due process requirements are carried out in accordance with Public Law 94-142 (IDEA).

GNETS of Oconee strives to offer students a new perspective to help them achieve their academic, social, and behavioral goals so that they can make the choices to be successful in school.  If you would like further information or would like to consult with us, please feel free to call us at the above phone number.

Services

Services include a range of classroom placements as well as consultative services to home school teachers and administrators.  We provide educational and therapeutic services to students through academic and psychological testing, individual, family, group counseling, and crisis intervention.  An important aspect of our program includes parent services to help support parents and assist them in obtaining resources to meet the challenges of raising a child with an emotional and behavioral disorder.

The curriculum we follow is the Georgia Performance Standards.  All classes are staffed with a certified teacher and certified support teacher (paraprofessional). Classrooms are developed to provide a positive learning environment focusing on each student's success and the student's ability to learn.  All staff are trained in MindSet, Life Space Crisis Intervention, Standard’s Based Instruction and Literacy.  We host various activities during the year to support parental and community involvement to include Fall Festival, Thanksgiving Luncheon, Christmas Party, Talent/Academic Fair, Field Day, Talent Show, and Student Cook-Outs.
